Abstract
5341. Lindsay, W. H., and Couper, H. R. March 5. Reversing - gearing; clutches, friction. - Reiates to reversing - gearing, suitable for boat propulsion, of the class in which the reversed drive is effected by holding against rotation a member which carries interengaging planet - wheels. This carrier takes the form of a closed drum 10 having disk ends 8, the whole being longitudinally slidable upon the driving and driven shafts 1, 4. The interengaging planetwheels 36, 37 mesh constantly with a gear 31 on the shaft 1, and with a gear 35 on the shaft 4, respectively. When a solid direct drive is required, a conical friction clutch surface 12 on the drum 10 is caused to grip a like internal surface 15 on a disk 13 secured to the shaft 1. When a second conical surface 12<1> on the drum 10 is caused to grip and be held by an internal surface 16 on a fixed member 18, the shaft 4 is driven reversely. An intermediate position of the drum 10 gives a 'free engine.' A lever 27 and hand-wheel 24 may be used for moving the drum 10 as required. An alternative form of clutch is shown in Fig. 5. Each internal gripping surface is formed as a metal coil 49, the ends of which are formed with blocks engaging recesses in the disk 13 &c.
