Reversing-gearing, suitable for marine propulsion, comprises a bevel-gear g on a driving- shaft B, a bevel-gear i on a driven shaft A, and a surrounding casing C, none of these parts being longitudinally movable to effect reversal Gears k connecting the gears g, i are carried on pins j<2> projecting radially from a ring j<1> surrounding the ends of the shafts B, A. Upon a sleeve f slidable on the shaft B there is secured a member f<1> having forks l<1> engaging the ends of the pins j<2>. When the sleeve f is thrust to the left by a lever D, a clutch surface on the member f<1> engages a conical clutch surface f<3> on the gear g, causing the gearing to rotate solid. When the sleeve f is moved to the right, a friction surface upon the member f<1> engages a brake surface f<2> upon the casing C. The pins j<2> are thus held stationary, and the gearing becomes operative to drive the shaft A reversely.
