Steering and manoeuvring submarine vessels; steering, controlling from a distance.-To select one of a number of circuits in apparatus for steering a torpedo &c. a series of contactpieces representing the Morse code for a letter characterizing the circuit is set up at the receiving-station, and is then rotated relatively to a series of incomplete circuits until it reaches the circuit corresponding to its own letter, which it closes. The apparatus may be used with a line-wire or with the usual apparatus of wireless telegraphy. In Fig. 1 are shown metal strips 1 forming gaps in the circuits 2, 3, which correspond to the Morse signals of the letters shown. The receiving electro-magnet 15 moves along the screw 16 and by means of the piece 18, raises the metal pieces 6 to form a combination corresponding to the signal sent, in this case the letter R. When the metal pieces 6 are moved along the pieces 1 in the direction from the letter J to the letter E, they do not fill up all the gap in any one row until they reach their own letter R, whereupon the circuit is completed through the electromagnet 9 to close the key 8 of a circuit for steering a vessel &c. The row of pieces 6 is then raised from the pieces 1 before it can close the circuit of any later row of the contacts. For secret working, the code connexion may be altered, as shown at the left of Fig. 1.
