Abstract

317. Pearce, H. V., and Moore, R. S. Jan. 6. Filtering.-In a process for separating dust, fume, soot, and the like from air and gases, the dust &c. is deposited on a filter between the sides of which a small difference of pressure is maintained, and is removed by automatic means adapted to produce a sudden rush of gas over the surface of the filter, which may increase the cleansing of the filter by causing it to vibrate. Flat rectangular filter bags a of flannel are placed in a series of rectangular compartments b so as to leave narrow intervening spaces. The compartments communicate with a common inlet pipe d, and the individual bags communicate with an outlet pipe e, dust-laden air being drawn through the bags from the outside at a slow rate by means of a fan. To remove the dust &c. deposited o n the bags, each compartment communicates by pipes h and a common main j with a dust receiver f in which a vacuum is maintained. Valves k, l, adapted to be opened by compressed air admitted to pneumatic cylinders m, normally close communication between the compartments and the receiver. The dust is removed successively from each compartment to the receiver after a predetermined interval, owing to the sudden rush of gas over the surfaces of the filters occasioned by the opening of the particular valve k and the valve l, by means of a rotary distributing-valve o which admits compressed air from a supply pipe p to the pneumatic cylinders by way of pipes n.
