Abstract
26,155. Chavassieu, H. L. J. Dec. 3. Cellulose and proteids, xanthates of.-Xanthates of proteid substances are produced by treating such substances with caustic alkali and carbon disulphide successively. Suitable parent materials are fibrin, casein, wool waste, silk and silk waste, myosin, gut, vegetable albumens, keratine substances, such as hair, horn, hide, leather and its waste, &c. The aqueous solutions of the xanthates are coagulated by ammonium salts, are decomposed by acids, and yield a red precipitate with lead acetate. They are miscible in any proportion with viscose solution, the solution resulting being decomposed by strong acids, yielding a compound of cellulose and proteid. The proteid xanthate solution, with or without viscose, can be formed into various filaments, pellicles, moulded forms, &c. by coagulation. In an example, the formed threads are treated in succession with solutions of quinone, hydroquinone, tannin, and potassium dichromate, and may afterwards be treated with a condensing and dehydrating agent, such as formaldehyde, in the presence of acetic anhydride and glacial acetic acid.
