Abstract

In making artificial threads by spinning viscose into a coagulation bath containing acid and salts and stretching the threads in air or a stretching bath with simultaneous or subsequent decomposition, the stretchability of the products is increased by using a coagulation bath temperature of at least 40 DEG C. and treating the partially decomposed threads, after withdrawal from the coagulation bath, with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble aldehyde at 10-30 DEG C., prior to entering the decomposition bath. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde or glyoxal may be used as the water-soluble aldehyde, and the aqueous solution may be applied as a bath or spray after the thread has been withdrawn from the coagulation bath, as for example by a roller system. As a stretching bath the decomposition bath itself may be so used or there may be a separate stretching bath, similar in chemical composition to the coagulation bath, but more dilute. A stretching bath temperature of 50-100 DEG C. is preferred. Examples are given.
