Abstract

25,661. Sainte-Beuve, A. Dec. 17, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Gas and like engines ; combustion-product engines. -In a system of propulsion for motor-cars &c., in which the products of combustion from an internalcombustion engine are used to actuate another engine, the internal - combustion engine A is independent of the driving-shaft and supplies explosive mixture to the combustion chamber B, part of the products of combustion returning to maintain the operation of the engine A and being exhausted through the valve d, while the rest enter the reservoir C whence they pass to the fluid-pressure engine D. During normal working the engine D employs all the products supplied by the engine A, but on an increase of load the engine D tends to slacken speed and the products accumulate in the reservoir C. The movement of the piston g adjusts the valve gear h and more fluid is admitted to the engine D. The adjustment of the valvegear may be made by hand. The piston g may also control the feed-valves b of the engine A in order to prevent development of uneconomical excess of pressure. At starting the admission to the engine D is closed and the governor cut off from the cylinders A until an excess of pressure is attained in the reservoir C. Admission to the engine D is then opened. In exceptional cases the piston g may be adjusted by band so as to obtain an excess pressure. Both engines may be contained in the same cooling-system. The explosions may occur in the cylinder A, the chamber B being then dispensed with.
