Turbines.-Relates to a speed-reducing wheel of the type in which one or more pairs of pinions mounted on spindles carried between the sides of the wheel gear respectively with a pinion secured on a stationary sleeve and with a pinion keyed on the shaft ; the periphery of the wheel may be made as a fly-wheel provided with a flange to be coupled to a steam turbine &c. The sides b, b<1> and the periphery a' are made in one piece ; one side b is provided with a central opening admitting the central pinions, while the periphery is formed with one or more openings, with cover-plates d, to provide for insertion of the planet pinions. Radial strengthening-webs a<1> with openings a<3> to permit passage of lubricant may be provided. The boss of the side b<1> runs on a liner b<3> on the shaft e to be driven ; the boss of the side b is secured by setscrews b<6> to a ring b<5> running on a liner b<4> on a sleeve f, which carries the central pinion h and is held stationary by the flange f<2> bolted to the frame, or formed with a recess f engaged by a lug &c. g' on the frame. When the set-screws b<6> are withdrawn, the wheel is disconnected from the ring b<5> and can be slid along the shaft to expose the pinions h, k. When a single pair of planet pinions i, j is used, a suitable balance weight may be provided. The pinion j is keyed to the extended boss of the pinion i, which may be mounted upon a solid spindle c, or upon a hollow spindle with end plugs and radial holes for the passage of lubricant.
