Abstract

22,438. Hall, H. R. Oct. 22. Gas and like engines, governing, and valves and valve-gear for. Co-axial gas and admission valves c, d are operated from a single cam by mechanism under the control of the governor so that the lift of the gas valve is varied in accordance with the speed of the engine. A lever q, or a pair of parallel levers, for actuating the gas valve c is fulcrumed on the end of an arm l connected with the governor, and receives motion from the admission-valve lever i by a link r as shown. In a modification tle e arm l is on the right of the valve stem and the lever q receives motion from a link connected to the valve-rod near its lower end. The levers q may work in slots in a crosshead member s on the gas - valve stem as shown, or slots may be formed in the levers q to work over pins on the member s. The arm l is adjusted by the governor so as to bring the fulcrum of the lever q nearer to, or farther from, the valve stem, thus varying the lift of the gas valve from zero to a maximum. The gas valve is held to its seat by a spring t, Fig. 9. This Figure also shows a sleeve v connected to the gas valve and controlling air ports so that as the lift of the gas valve is decreased the air supply is throttled but not extirely cut off.
