Abstract

17,365. Tudor, J. W. Aug. 18. Gas and explosive - vapour engines, starting. Spring mechanism for starting an engine comprises a sliding frame C carrying a vertical shaft 38, to which one end of the spring 44 is attached and which carries bevel-gearing 32 and friction clutches D, E for engaging corresponding clutches 27, 28 on the shaft 25 of the motor. The clutches are automatically disengaged when the spring is fully wound up and has run down. The spring is connected at its free end to an arm 47 on the frame C, and the shaft 38 is carried in bearings 20, 23, 24 which slide in the frame. The bearings are held in position in the frame by a spring 61, Fig. 7, and spring pawls 55, 56, 64, 65 having inclined faces. To wind up the spring, the frame is moved to the left, and, when its tension overcomes that of the spring 61, the pawls 55, 56 are forced apart and the shaft 38 slides in the frame C and the clutch D, 28 becomes disengaged. To start the motor, the frame is moved to the right, the clutch E, 27 becomes engaged and a stop 70 engages pawls 49, 50 which release the shaft 38 and allow the spring 44 to unwind. When the tension of the spring is decreased sufficiently, the spring 61 again comes into action, forcing the shaft 38 to the left, tripping the pawls 64, 65, and disengaging the clutch E, 27. The clutches may be dispensed with, and the bevel-gearing so spaced that the wheel 37 may be disengaged from the wheels on the shaft 25.
