Ball bearings.-In a combined ball-thrust and journal bearing for wheels, shafts, &c. of the kind described in Specification No. 11,567, A.D. 1906, the journal races on the rotating part are clamped in position, and those on the fixed part are free to adjust themselves longitudinally to the paths of the balls. The outer races 8, Fig. 1, are clamped against a shoulder 11 in a hub 10 by a cap 9 and a distance-piece 7, and the inner races are free to slide on a sleeve 2 on the fixed axle 1. The distance-piece 7 is formed with an abutment 6 for the thrust bearing, the races 5 of which are held between fixed and adjustable abutments 3, 4 on the sleeve 2. The ball races 5, 8 are of standard type, consisting of grooved rings. In a modification, the parts 3, 4 are carried by the distance-piece 7 and the abutment 6 by the sleeve 2. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the distance-piece consists of two parts 12<a>, 12<b>, which hold between them a ring 13 formed with races for the two series of thrust balls. The part 12<a> may be made integrally with the hub 10, affording a shoulder against which the ring 13 is pressed. Fig. 5 shows the application of the invention to a rotating shaft. The outer races 8 are free to slide in a sleeve 2<b> formed with a thrust abutment 6<a>, and the inner races 8 are separated by a distance-piece 2<c> carrying the thrust races 5.
