3296. Goble, B. G. March 2. Ball bearings.-In a ball bearing for wheel hubs &c., having balls running on conical races with twopoint contact, end thrusts are taken by balls 16 running on plane surfaces formed on the outer races 15 and on rings 12 adjustably mounted on the inner cones 11. One of the cones 11 is adjustable on the axle 10, so that independent adjustment of all the bearings is provided for. The balls at each end of the hub are mounted in a common cage, consisting of a conical ring to which a flat ring or a number of sections are connected by hinges 18. The balls are retained in openings in the rings by struck-up tongues 17<c>. The hinges allow the cage to accommodate itself to adjustments of the bearings.
