Abstract
6493. Liddle, J. A. March 24. Capstans; winches. - An open-ended drum or a capstan is mounted upon a shaft in alinement with the motor shaft, so as to be driven therefrom through planet gearing enclosed in a casing. In Fig. 2 (the right-hand portion) is shown a capstan comprising a cover a and drum portions b, c bolted together and running upon a spindle d, carried on a plate secured by pins g to a casting J, forming the cover of a gear box formed on the base-plate k. To the shaft u of the motor is keyed a spur-wheel s meshing with pinions o on a planet carrier r, formed with a spurwheel q. The wheel q meshes with planet pinions n mounted on a second carrier i. Both sets of planet pinions mesh with an internally toothed ring l fixed in the interior of the gear box k. The carrier i has keyed to it a spur-wheel h meshing with pinions f mounted on fixed axes g, which in turn gear with an internally toothed wheel m fixed in the part c of the drum. Fig. 8 represents the manner in which the pinion s is mounted on the motor shaft u. A hollow recess is formed between the motor shaft and the pinion s into which projects a flanged. tube T, which is bolted to the base 7c and serves to retain the oil in the gear chamber. Fig. 1 (the left-hand portion) represents the .gearing arranged in the interior of an horizontal drum. In this form, the base k<1> is extended to form an horizontal base-plate. The piece J<1> is formed as a cone brake while the ring m<1> is attached to a cone clutch. The drum is formed in two parts b<1> screwed together in order that the clutch faces on the interior of the drum may be adjusted. The drum is moved longitudinally by slightly rotating a disk W', which has inclined recesses, with which engage pins k<2> in the part k<1>, and forms one member of a compound ball and roller bearing, the thrust being regulated by a spring z<1> adjusted by a nut x<1> through a roller bearing y'.
