Abstract
18,827. Schoedelin, G., and Schoedelin, F. Oct. 12,1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Gearing; capstans; cranes; hoists; winches.- Relates to reducing-gearing of the type in which a conical motion is imparted to a universally Controlled toothed wheel which rolls upon a driven element having a different number of teeth. The driving shaft 1 passes through the driven wheel 8, and an inclined extension 2 of that shaft is a sliding fit in the hub of the driving-wheel 3. The wheel 3 is supported by vertical diametral pivots 4 upon a ring 5 which is itself mounted upon fixed horizontal diametral pivots 6. The wheel 3 is thus kept from rotating about its axis and held in mesh with the wheel 8. Rotation of the shaft 1 causes the gear surface of the wheel 3 to roll on that of the wheel 8, imparting a differential motion to the latter proportional to the difference in the numbers of teeth on the wheels. The Specification in the original form as published under the Act of 1901 comprises also a modification in which the driving- shaft is continued on both sides of its inclined portion, and a modification in which the driving- shaft does not pass through the driven element. Mention is also made of the application of the invention to lifting-appliances such as winches, hoists, cranes, and capstans, and as gearing for electric motors. This subject - matter does not appear in the Complete Specification as accepted.
