Abstract

5264. Allison, C. A., [Soc. Anon. H. & A. Dufaux et Cie]. March 9. Gas and like engines, igniting in. Magnetos for igniting in engines, especially such as are used for propelling cycles, are arranged to occupy as little space as possible by placing the magneto shaft at right-angles to that of the engine, by which the magneto may be driven through an adjustable coupling for timing the spark. As shown in Fig. 1, the magneto b is driven by helicoidal gearing cut on one of the crank-disks e engaging with a wheel d and the magneto shaft c. The adjustable coupling, Fig. 2, may be placed between the wheel d and the magneto shaft c, and consists of two oppositely threaded portions c<1>, d<1>, upon which is mounted a sleeve g, which can be moved axially by a lever h so as to alter the phase relation of the shaft c and wheel d, and hence the timing of the spark, axial movement of the wheel d being prevented by a collar i. The lever h may also operate the interrupter so that ignition always occurs when the electromotive force is a maximum.
