Magnetos, driving.-The rotor or armature shaft 11 of an ignition generator for internal-combustion engines and one of a pair of spanking electrodes are oscillated by means of a trip lever 19 controlled by a torsional spring 26 arranged on an extension 25 of the lever 19. The lever 19 is mounted to turn freely upon a rod 18 which is fixed to a bracket 1 bolted to the outer wall of the engine cylinder; one end of the spring 26 is fixed to the bracket 1, the other end carrying a roller 29 which bears against a face of the lever. The shaft 11 fits into a recess in the lever and is coupled thereto by interfitting slots and projections 24. The lever 19 is actuated by a push rod 40 which is provided with a shoulder 41 engaging a projection 42 on the lever; a second projection 43 on the lever serves to force the rod 40 downwardly and release the lever, which is then turned round rapidly by the spring 26, causing a sudden movement of the generator shaft 11. A member 2 projecting from the bracket 1 extends into an opening in the cylinder wall and encloses sparking electrodes 3, 4. The electrode 4 is movable and is controlled by a spring 9 to hold the sparking points 6, 7 normally in contact. The points 6, 7 are separated for the passage of the spark by the end 36 of the lever 19 striking a sliding rod 33, the end 39 of which engages an extension 8 of the movable electrode 4. The end 39 is normally out of contact with the arm 8 to allow for wear of the sparking points. The rod 33 is mounted in brackets 32, 35 and is surrounded by a spring 38 arranged between a collar 37 and a threaded adjusting sleeve 34. The generator G is supported by a rod 10 fixed to the bracket 1 and passing through a lug 13 on the rotor housing. The rod and lug are formed with keyways into which extends a key 17 to prevent axial movement of the generator around the rod. The keyways &c. may bo omitted by extending the rods 18 through the lever 19 into a recess in the end of the shaft 11.
