Wood, treating.-Wood is rendered suitable for use as separators, supports, packing-pieces, containing-vessels, envelopes, for electrodes &c. in electric batteries and electrolytic cells, by soaking in a solution of alkali in spirit, such as alcohol, under suitable conditions of pressure and temperature, washing with spirit, and drying. Less than 50 per cent of water may be mixed with the spirit in order to remove the products formed by the alkali in the wood, and the spirit used in the various operations may be recovered.
