Abstract

190,777. Prangnell, J. P. Sept. 21, 1921. Vacuum tubes.- A five electrode thermionic valve comprises a cathode 20,.Fig. 1, two anodes 10, 11 of approximately semi-cylindrical form, and two grids 23, 24 curved to enclose a cylindrical space, the electrodes being arranged coaxially. The grids may be in the form of helices, preferably coiled in opposite directions, or may consist of mesh cylinders. The electrodes are mounted on a glass foot, and leads to the anodes are taken through a cap 16 at the other end of the bulb to connectors 17, the cathode and grids being connected with plugs 27 in the lower cap 28. In the wireless receiving system shown in Fig. 4, the outer grid 23 is connected with the cathode 20 through the secondary winding of a transformer 35, the primary of which is connected in the anode-cathode circuit of an amplifying valve 31 connected with the aerial circuit 30. The inner grid 24 is connected with a potentiometer 36 through one winding 34 of a transformer, the other winding 38 of which is connected between the anode 10 and a high tension battery 33. The other anode 11 is connected through a telephone receiver 37 with the battery side of the winding 38.
