Abstract

190,767. Whitehill, G. Sept. 16, 1921. Covers, wagon and like.-Consists of a hood or movable cover for vehicles adapted to be drawn forward from a housing at the rear by travelling bands or cables. The hoods may be flexible or formed of collapsible sections of rigid material. Fig. 1 shows a hood of flexible material applied to a motor coach, the hood being supported on standards A, B, C removably supported in sockets in the body. The standards carry grooved pulleys P, R, Fig. 5, in brackets T, star wheels V acting as wire guards. Levers X pivoted to the standards A carry loose drums A<1> and pawls C' controlled by studs F<1> and engaging toothed projections B<1> on sockets I). The axle Z of the drums A<1> also carries a clutch plate K<1>, Fig. 9, connected to a coil spring M<1>, the drum being adapted to engage the plate by a key T<1> normally held off by a projection Y<1>. The drum A<1> is grooved at F<2> to receive the winding wire, which is adapted to be locked to the drum by one of a series of keys L<2>. The endless wire or like cable or chain W<2> passes from the drum A<1> over the pulleys P, R and down through hooks D<3> on the body to grooved and serrated driving-wheels V<2> mounted on an axle T<2> operated by a removable hand-crank U<2>. The cover E<2> is fixed to hoop sticks M<3> having rings O<3> passing over the wires W<2>, and to front a hoop stick F<3>, which is fixed to the wires, is provided with a covering for attachment to the wind-screen, and rests on brackets S<3> on the standards A. A bar Y<3> weights the cover at the rear. Wires Z' on the hoop stick F<3> connect it either to the levers X or to the wires W<2>. The cover is housed in a box E<4> having back and side lids F<4>, G<4> and platforms J<4>. Slotted guide tubes K<4>, Fig. 19, receive the wires W<2> and spring catches M<4> exert a drag on the rings O<3> to ensure extension of the cover during opening. The covering of the front hoop stick acts as a support for the housed standards. Dust covers U<4> act as guards for the wires. Side curtains may be carried by the hood and be adapted to open and fold with the cover. To lower the cover, the handle U<2> is placed on the near side, the hoop stick F<3> is detached from the screen, and the wires Z<3> are connected to the wires W<2>. The key T<1> is then operated to clutch the drums A<1> to the springs M<1> and the cover is wound back, the lids being opened. The wire W<2> is then locked in the groove F<2> and the lever X released. The standard A is carried rearward and clipped to the standard C, which is subsequently clipped to the standard B. The springs M<1> tensioned by the rotation of the drums A<1>, are during this movement released to wind the wires W<2> on the drums A<1>. The axle T<2> may be driven from the engine. Fig. 22 shows a roof of metal, wood, or the like supported on uprights and formed of jointed sections supported on channelled hoop sticks W<4> at alternate joints, the hoop sticks having arms X<4>, Fig. 26, projecting through the cover and carrying central and side hinges. The central hinges Y<4> are adapted to slide in brackets C<5> on plates D<5>, springs E<5> being connected to the hinges and to the cover. The side hinges Z<4>, Fig. 29, have arms X<4> hinged to plates H<5>, I<5> fixed to the cover. The channelled hoop sticks carry off any water passing through the hinges. At the Intermediate joints O<5> inside hinges are provided and the joints are tongued and beaded. A right-angled hinge is formed at the corner S<5>. The wires run in guide rails Y<5> set at the top and back of the body. The cover is housed in a box B<6> with a two-part hinged lid D<6> to which the end of the cover is detachably connected, and sida boxes F<2> may be provided if required. The cover may alternatively be housed about the dash. The standards may be fixed and side curtains may be provided, while in railway wagons the standards may be dispensed with and the wire runners fixed to the sides.
