Abstract
190,764. Rowledge, A. J., and Rolls- Royce, Ltd. Sept. 2, 1921. Engines with main shaft parallel to axis of cylinder; driving-gear.-In swash-plate mechanism which is especially adapted for internalcombustion engines, the swash-plate is enclosed by a casing through which lubricant for the bearings is supplied by pumps. Rotation of the casing is prevented, either by trunnions in blocks moving in guides, or by a gimbal ring. The swash-plate c, Fig. 1 is secured between the two parts of a casing, of which one part b<1> is integral with the shaft b, while the other part b<2> is secured to the shaft. The plate is enclosed in a casing d in two parts bolted together and having trunnions d<1> in blocks e<1> moving in guides e. The casing d has recesses for bearing pads f and has pockets d<2> for the bearings of the piston-rods g<2>. The latter have cup-shaped ends g<4> bearing on hemispheres d<3> mounted on pivots d<4> in the pockets d'. The piston-rod ends are secured by washers and nuts d<5>, d<6>. Splashing of lubricants into the engine cylinders is prevented by guards g<3>. In the modification shown, in Fig. 2, the casing d is supported by a gimbal ring e<1>, the trunnions of which are preferably in the plane of the bearings g<4>, the swash-plate disc c being consequently eccentric to the shaft. The disc c is formed at the periphery of a cup c', which is bolted to a flange b<1> on the shaft. The casing d bears on one face only of the disc through the medium of a pad f. Trunnions e<33> of the gimbal ring e' are supported in bearings in a bracket e' carried by the engine casing, while the other trunnions e<44> and e<4> of the gimbal ring carry the casing d. Specification 875/05, [Class 12, Bearings &c.], is referred to.
