Filing papers &c.-The clamping- bars 1, 2 of a loose-leaf binder are connected by links 11, 12, 14, 15 to a reciprocating plate 10, which is operated by clutch mechanism contained in a channel-bar 13, in such a manner that the clamping-bars may be moved freely towards one another but are locked against separation. The clutch consists of a slightly tapered tongue 27 attached to a block 28 carried by the plate 10, spring-pressed gripping- jaws 23, and a shell 19 having a conical end 22 to act as closing-means for the jaws 23. The shell 19 is secured to a threaded sleeve 18 by a pin 20, which slides in a groove in the bar 13. After the clamping-bars have been manually pressed together, a positive clamping action is obtained by a few turns of a screw 17, which engages with the sleeve 18. To release the clutch, so that the binder may spring open under the action of springs 8 contained in the posts, a fixed stop 30, through which the tongue 27 passes, is provided. If the clutch is screwed in so that the jaws 23 abut against this stop, the jaws are forced inwards and release their grip of the tongue 27. A casing 37, spring-pre3sed out of position when the binder is open, but held in position by a shoulder 46 of the clamping-bar 1 when the binder is closed, may hold a paper seal over the key opening.
