ERNST AXTHELM, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
BINDER FOR LOOSE L EDGER-LEAVES.
SPECIFICATION forming art of Letters Patent No. 674,152, dated May 14, 1901. Application file; November 30, 1900. serial No. 38,188. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNST AXTHELM, a citizen of the United States of America, residingat Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders for Loose Ledger-Leaves, of which the following is a s pecification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsin binders for loose-leaf lodgers and the like, and has for one object the provision of novel means wherebyanumher of leaves or sheets of paper may be easily held together and any number desired removed therefrom when the occasion requires.
The invention has for its further object to provide novel means whereby the device may be reversed and a number of sheets or leaves of paperheld together for the purpose of storing the same away.
The present invention further aims to construct a device that will be extremely simple as to the number of parts employed, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive, and highly efficient in its operation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel com bination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my im proved binder. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the end of the spring locking-plate. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the movable plate, showing in detail the removable hearing. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the removable bearing. 7
In the drawings, the reference-numeral 1 indicates a base-plate having two upright standards 2 secured thereto. The referencenumeral 3 indicates a movable plate slidingly mounted upon said standards 2, said movable plate having arranged therein openings 4 to receive the standards 2. The reference-numeral 5 indicates a central opening formed in said movable plate 3, said opening having a part of its walls formed at an angle, as shown at 6, to receive a wedge-shaped portion 7 of the bearing 8, to which is pivotally secured at 9 a cam 10, carrying an operatinglever 11. Said bearing 8 extends upwardly through the opening 12, formed in the'spring lockingplate 14, said lockingplate having formed therein'wedge-shaped openings 15, through which the standards 2 extend. The locking-plate 14 is so constructed that in its normal or unlocked position a part thereof at each end will lie upon the movable plate 3, the part of the locking-plate between the standards or posts 2 being inclined upwardly from each standard or post to the center of the said plate, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, so that as the cam is moved to the position shown in dotted lines in this'view the locking-plate will be pressed to the position also shown in dotted lines to impinge the plate upon the standards or post.
The operation of my improved binder for loose-leaf lodgers is as follows: The leaves or pages being placed upon the standards, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, assuming that the other parts are in position as shown in this view, the lever carrying the cam is operated to the position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, which will tend to depress the spring locking-plate simultaneously with the operation of pressing the ends of the lockingplate outwardly, thereby wedging the openings of the same against the standards and obtaining a secure lock, which will effectually retain all the leaves or pages in their proper position. When it is desired to unlock the same, the operation is reversed, which will allow the removable plate and the locking-plate to be easily disengaged from the standards. Any number of pages may then be removed or replaced, as the case may be. When it is desired to store a number of pages away or file the same, the cam may be easily removed from the hearing by removing the pin, which will allow the bearing to be likewise removed from the movable plate. The removable plate and locking-plate are then reversed upon the standards and pressed down upon the leaves or pages, so as to compress the bowed portion of the locking-plate to a horizontal line and in engagement with the leaves and impinging the Walls of the wedge-shaped openings 15 upon the posts or standards to hold the plate and leaves in potion.
It will be particularly noted that the removable bearing and cam may be employed for other binders. In case a number of them are stored in the manner heretofore described it Will only be necessary to use the removable bearing and cam for the binder that is in actual use.
The many advantages obtained by the use of myimproved binder will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. I11 a temporary binder, the combination with a base-plate carrying standards orposts, of a movable plate having openings to receive the standards or posts, a springlocking-plate mounted on the movable plate and provided with wedge-shaped openings to receive the standards or posts, a removable bearing centrally secured in the movable plate and eX- tending through the locking-plate, and a cam carried by said bearing for depressing the locking-plate to force and hold the Walls of its wedge-shaped openings in engagement with the standards or posts, substantially as described. i
2. In a binder of the character described, the combination of a base-plate, upright standards secured thereto, a movable plate slidably mounted on said standards, a spring locking-plate having openings adapted to receive said standards, a removable bearing centrally arranged in and extending through said movable plate and lockinwplate, a cam secured to said bearing above the locking-plate, and an operating-lever carried by said cam for actuating the latter to depress the lockingplate and force the same into engagement with the standards, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
