Telemeters; theodolites.-An instrum e n t for giving readings of distances by sighting a surveying-rod consists of a box with a peep - hole eyepiece o which can be racked up and down, and with two glass plates a, b in front, one being fixed and the other b movable. Up to small distances readings are taken direct on the rod, but for fairly large distances, the rod serves as a fixed length and, after adjusting the eyepiece till the horizontal line y on the p 1 a t e a registers with the bottom of the rod, the plate b is racked up till an horizontal z on it corresponds with the top. The spindle v, by which the plate b is racked up, also carries a pinion t taking into a wheel carrying a scale, which can be used to give direct readings of the distance. The whole instrument can be rotated in azimuth, and a compass f can be fitted to give directions.
