Class 97(2) A staff having a scale along its length has, at its centre, a sighting target arranged to be movable from an inoperative position to a sighting position in which a sighting line is perpendicular to the length of the staff. This target assists in locating the staff perpendicular to the sight line of the levelling instrument. A bubble tube may also be provided. The scale may be calibrated so that the length which subtends a predetermined angle at remote point gives a direct indication of the distance of that point from the staff.
