Abstract

20,079. Thomas, J. Sept. 7, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Chairs; rail j o i n t s.-The upturned, undercut, or recessed edge of one fish - plate B having a base to support the rail is tightened against the under cut or recessed edge of the other fish-plate E by a key G kept in place by set-screws M. The space occupied by the key provides clearance for readily inserting the fish-plate E, which has a groove to engage a fish-bolt head F and is fastened to the fish-plate B by countersunk bolts J. The whole is secured to sleepers by spikes L, which may also serve to fasten the fish-plates together and to secure the key by engaging its curved surface. The keys may extend for a part or the whole of the length of the fish-plate, and when taking up the wear of the fish-plates a larger key is substituted. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 show different types of keyways.
