PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV SCHMIDT, OF NORTH BRADDOGK, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAIL-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,259, dated May 17, 1904.
Application filed March 16, 1904.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at North Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rail-joints, and relates more particularly to that class wherein nuts and bolts are entirely dispensed with.
The invention has for its object the provision of novel means whereby two sections of rails may be effectually joined together and easily removed when desired; furthermore, to provide a joint that will permit the expansion and contraction of the rails.
My invention still further aims to provide a joint that will be extremely simple in construetion, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efiicient in its use.-
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved rail-joint, showing the same secured to the base of a rail. Fig. 2 is a vertical sec tional view showingthe rail removed from the joint. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 4: isa top plan view of the rail-joint with the fishplate removed therefrom. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the removable fish-plate.
In the drawings, the reference-numeral 1 represents the rail, andtlie chair is represented by reference-numeral 2, said chair carrying an integral fish-plate 3. This chair has also formed therein dovetailed grooves 4L, and
Serial No. 198,441. (No model.)
The operation of my improved rail-joint is as follows: The rails are secured in position in the chair, and the removable iish-plate is then applied and secured in position, as hereinbefore stated. When it is desired to remove the joint, the fastening means is withdrawn, which will permit the removal of the fish-plate, as will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings.
It will be obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a rail-joint, the combination of a chair carrying an integral fish-plate, said chair having formed therein dovetail grooves, a removable fish-plate carrying dovetails seated in said grooves, and means to retain said fishplate in the locked position.
2. In a rail-joint, the combination of a chair carrying an integral fish-plate, said chair having dovetail grooves formed therein, a removable iish-plate carrying dovetails, said chair and said removable fish-plate having corresponding openings formed therein, and fastening means extending through said openings, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAV SCHMIDT.
