RAlL SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 697,101, dated April 8, 1902.
Application filed October 19, 1901. Serial No. 79,298. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. OATMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mc- Keesport,in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rail-Supports, of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rail-joints, and relates more particularly to that class wherein the fish-plates are not bolted directly to the rail, but are secured in a manner that will assure a perfectly tight joint; furthermore, allow for expansion and contraction of the rails which is due to the changes in temperature.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rail-joint and metallic cross-tie that will cushion the rail and prevent same from spreading.
The invention further contemplates to provide an adjustable fish-plate that may be laterally moved to accommodate any size of rail or thickness of web.
A still further object of the invention is to construct a device that will be extremely simple, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is bad to the accompanying drawings,
4, which is mortised in the other section of the base-plate 5, having slots 6 formed therein and guideways7.
The reference-numeral 8 represents a looking fish-plate carrying bolts 9, the lower end of said bolts being provided with square elongated heads 10, operating in guideways 7. These heads have preferably interposed between the guideways Washers 11.
The reference-numeral 12 represents securing-nuts which are attached to the screwthreaded end of the bolt and are arranged upon the flat portion 14 of the locking fishplate'. Washers 15 are interposed between the nuts and the upper face 14 of the locking.
fish-plate. A locking-nut 16, composed of a strip of metal having recesses out therein to correspond with the nuts, is secured over the nuts 12 and held in position by means of the securing-nut 17.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved rail-joint will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings, and it will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a rail-joint, the combination with the rails, a base-plate formed of two sections, one of said sections having formed therein slots and guideways, on the under face thereof, and the other section carrying an integral fish-plate forming a chair portion, bolts and nuts secured in said locking fish-plates sliding in said slots and guideways, all parts being arranged and operating substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE E. OATMAN.
In presence of JOHN GROETZINGER, M. HUNTER.
