IVILLIAH TEAIWIER, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
KEY-BOLT AND WASHER FOR RAILWAY-JOINTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,468, dated April 15, 1890.
' Application filed June 15, 1889- Serial No. 314,472. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM TEAMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-Bolts and Washers for Rail-Joints; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation tokey-bolts and washers for rail-joints and devices of a similar character; and it consists in the construe tion and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a rail-joint provided with my improved key-bolt, tapered washer, and the headed and notched or externally-recessed spring-key. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the key-bolt, recessed springkey, and tapered washer shown separately from the rail-joint and fish-plate; and Fig. 3 is a crosssect-ion of the taper washer.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A and B designate the rails or sections of the rail which assist in forming the rail-joint.
The fish-plates C and D are located on each side of the webs E of the rails A and B and are provided with base-flanges F G, said flanges F G resting on the base-flanges H I of the rail-sections pr0per.- Notches K are provided in the edges of the flanges F G, which serve to receive the securingspikes by which the fish-plates and rails are secured to the ties of the road.
The webs L of the rails and the vertical arms of the fish-plates are provided with aligned bolt-holes M when the parts are properly placed together for the reception of the bolts N, the latter being slotted through diametrically at I to receive the bifurcated or split key Q, which is made of steel and has a head R, from which the normally outwardlycurved spring-arms S T project.
U is an annular washer, which is tapered or wedge-shaped-that is, one portion of its periphery is made thicker than the remainder of the periphery, so that when the washer is put to place on the projecting end of the shank of the bolt the thicker portion of the washer will by force of gravity settle or move down whenever the washer becomes loosened by the passage of the trains over the rails, and will necessarily cause the key-bolt to become tightened and the looseness to be taken up. By this construction. and the tendency of the washer to be operated by gravitythelooseness caused by jarring of the passing train or from other cause will be automatically taken up by the operation of the Wedge-shaped wash er without disturbing the bolt or spring-key.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the rail and fishplate having aligned bolt-holes, of the keybolt, the wed ge-shaped washer, and the bifurcated headed key, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. ii a rail-joint, the combination, with a tran versely-slotted bolt seated in said joint, of L annular washer wedge-shaped in crossse ionslipped upon said bolt and a bifurcated headed spring-key seated in the slot in said bolt and bearing against the wedgeshaped washer, substantially as specified.
3. In a rail-joint, the combination, with the recessed or transversely-slotted bolt, of the headed bifurcated spring-key recessed transversely in the outer face of one of its arms, and the annular tapering washer adapted to tighten the parts automatically when the parts become loosened, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM TEAMER.
