Axes; chisels.-An appliance for making incisions in the bark of rubber trees consists of a knife or knives mounted in a handle in such a manner that the depth of the incisions can be regulated and the knives readily dislodged after the stroke has been made. Figs. 3 and 4 show one form of the apparatus, in which two knives p are carried by an adjustable screw spindle q within a hollow casing m having a projecting foot piece k which limits the depth of the cut and also acts as a fulcrum for wrenching the knives out of the cut. The knives may be driven into the bark by means of a mallet. In a modified form, the knives are fixed and the foot-plate movable.
