The valve is driven by bevel-gearing from a countershaft and may be moved axially either by hand or by a governor ; when it is moved to the extreme position, the port f is closed and the engine serves as a brake. Igniting.-A sparking-plug may be located near the port f, or the fixed terminal n, shown in plan in Fig. 4, of a low-tension igniting system is placed in the port f, as shown in Fig. 3. The moving terminal is a pawl or wiper o carried on the rotary valve. Owing to the inclined position of the bar n, the time of ignition is altered by axial adjustment of the rotary valve. This axial adjustment simultaneously adjusts the position of the armature of the magneto-electric machine, by sliding the worm b<1> by means of the bell-crank lever p and rod r.
