Abstract

1050. Wetter, J., [W³lffing, C. F.]. Jan. 15. Iron oxides.-Black oxide of iron suitable as the basis for a paint for structural ironwork is prepared from the waste liquors obtained in pickling iron in hydrochloric or sulphuric acid. The excess of acid in the liquors is first neutralized, preferably with iron filings, and two-thirds the quantity of ammonia necessary to precipitate the whole of the iron is added and the mixture diluted and oxidized by blowing air through or by stirring. The liquid is afterwards boiled, the remaining third of the ammonia is added, and the mixture is boiled under pressure until the whole of the iron is precipitated. Ammonium sulphate or chloride is obtained as a by-product, which may be used to form ammonia.
