Floors; ceilings; girders and beams.-Fire-proof floors and ceilings are formed of hollow terra-cotta or ferro-concrete blocks supported by ferroconcrete joists which may be cast in moulds or formed in situ. In one form, shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the joists a, supported by the walls or main steel joists g, are reinforced by bars b and fluted or pierced with openings c to key them to the concrete filling d; the lower faces are protected by terracotta .slabs e screwed to or suspended from the lower flanges, or grooved to engage the blocks j. The main joists are also enclosed in terra-cotta blocks h, Fig. 1. The blocks may be keyed together, and may be shallow or deep, as shown on the left and right hand respectively of Fig. 1. In a modification, shown in Fig. 5, ferro-concrete blocks j<1> are bevelled to rest on the sloping sides of the ferro-concrete joists a', a concrete fillet m being inserted between the blocks and the steel joists.
