Abstract

23,091. Nelson, I. T., and Murray, J. Nov. 10. Bookbinding.-End-papers, and, if required, strengthening-strips, are attached to end signatures of books by the machine shown in Fig. 1. The end-papers are formed from a roll a of paper, from which the web is drawn by continuouslymoving feed-rollers driven by a friction disk and wheel from the main shaft t, slack being taken up by looping-rollers 10. The web is folded by a suitable folder c, shown as a triangular plate, whence it passes over a pasting-wheel f to a table g. An attendant places the signature h against a fixed guide i and a movable guide j, and presses it against the stripe of paste on the web. A strengthening-tape k may be drawn from the roller l over guide-rollers and a pasting-roller n, and may pass with the end-papered signature through rollers n ; if the strip is to be folded, the curved plate o may be used for the purpose. The intermittent feed-rollers q, driven by a ratchet and pawl by the connecting-rod w from the variable crank on the shaft t<1>, serve to draw the web along and to stop it at intervals to facilitate the exact placing of the signature. A guillotine knife r cuts the web and strengthening-strip as the signature passes to the collecting-table s, which is held up by a spring 7 against the ratchet teeth on the bar 6, and is gradually depressed as the number of signatures beneath the presser-bar 9 increases.
