Abstract
16,242. Stone, A. J. July 11. Making labels. - Consists in apparatus for joining sheets of postage and like stamps together to form a continuous web, and then severing this to form a number of strips one stamp wide, and winding these strips on separate spools. The separate sheets 5, Fig. 1, are passed along a table 1 until the leading edge registers with that of the straight-edge 7 pivoted at 8 to the table. A damping-device 10 in a recess 11 of the table is then pushed across the table by means of a knob 13, and its wick 12 damps the edge of the sheet. This is then taken forward to a position above a plate 15 and affixed to the end of the web 4 previously formed, which is wound on a spool 3 by means of a handle 17, the spool being braked by a band 21 pulled by a spring 24. When the spool is filled, it is transferred to brackets 25, Fig. 4, in a cutting-machine, and the web is passed over a roller 27 and a table 28, beneath a tension bar 32 and a roller 34, and between cutting-disks 38 on shafts 35, 36. The severed strips are stripped from the shafts 35, 36 by strippers 43 and are wound on separate spools 44 arranged in different planes. The bar 32 can be raised by a screw 33 to allow a web to be inserted beneath it, and guide-plates 29 'between which the web passes are adjustable by screws 30. The spindles 45 of the spools 44 are journaled in arms 46 pivoted at 47 to the machine frame and are turned by a common band 52 passing over pulleys 51 on the spindles and over a pulley 53 on the shaft 36. The arms 46 can be raised to tension the band 52 and are supported by rods 48 adjustably secured in tubes 49 by screws 50. The pulleys 51 are loosely mounted on the spindles 45 and are pressed against collars 65, Fig. 5, thereon by springs 67, this producing a frictional drive which allows the pulleys to slip on the spindles as the diameters of the rolls increase. The shaft 36 is driven by a handcrank or by a pulley 54 turned by a motor through a belt 55. The sheets of stamps when joined together may be passed directly to the cutting-disks instead of being wound upon a spool first.
