Abstract
21,575. Appel, G. Sept. 24. Delivery - apparatus; cutting-apparatus; gumming - apparatus; grippers.-In apparatus for folding paper, the sheet may be first given a transverse fold and the folded edge cut off by an oscillating cutter and the associated strips 30, Fig. 2, thus formed, are moved transversely to be engaged by the gripper 19 of a revolving former 17 on which they are wound. A transversely - moving slitter 23 engaging with a groove 22 in the former 17 then cuts all the layers while the former 17 is at rest, and the resulting associated folded sheets are taken off by rolls 28, 29, the folding blade 25 being cut away at intervals to allow the rolls 28, 29 to grip the sheets effectively. These sheets may be again folded in similar manner after the folded edges have been again cut away. In the form of machine shown diagrammatically in Fig. 2 and in plan in Fig. 7, the sheets are fed by rollers 13, 14, 15 to the hooked rear end 20 of the gripper 19, which acts as a stop. The under portion 21 of the gripper is so curved that the length of the sheet gripped will he the same as that which passes over the outside of the gripper. As the sheets 30 are being wound on the former 17 they are kept tight by a spring 27, and each layer is gummed at the portion passing round the end of the folding- knife 25, by contact with a band 51 supplied with gum from a reservoir 53 and rollers 54, 55. The slitter 23 is on a carriage 24 caused to slide transversely at the correct times by steel tapes 81, 81<a>, attached to a drum 80 and passing round pulleys 82, 83. In the machine shown in Fig. 7, two sets of folding-devices are employed, the folding-former 32 first folding the sheet to form strips the width of which is the height of a finished leaf; these are then conveyed to the former 17 in the direction of the arrow 34. and wound up at right-angles to a width equal to the width of a finished leaf, the edges being then cut away. The former 17 is made adjustable in width, each half 17<a>, 17<b>, Fig. 6, engaging with guides and adjusting-screws 18 at the ends. In a modification, the gripper 45, Fig. 11, has no stop, but the sheets pass between it and the former 17 to an independent stop 42, slidably mounted on the carrier 41 for a knife blade 40, which is moved forward to cut the strips. In some cases, the slot 22 in the former 17, with which the knife 40 or slitter 23 engages, is set out of line with the folding-blade 25, so that the sheets are folded slightly unequally, and the middle sheet of the product can easily be found.
