Abstract

Cooling and ventilating; field magnets.-To facilitate the cooling of dynamo-electric machines having revolving field magnets, in which air is forced through the space between the stator and rotor, the field magnets are constructed so that the air gap gradually increases in width from the magnetic to the neutral axis. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the bipolar field magnet r is made approximately elliptical, with its major axis coinciding with the magnetic axis. The uniformlydistributed grooves are made of varying depths, the outer space of the grooves near the magnetic axis being left open or filled with a neutral substance. In multipolar machines the air gap between successive poles may be enlarged by a gradual curvature, or by forming recesses with obtuse angles. In machines having field magnets of the ordinary double-T shape, filling-pieces s, s, Fig. 2, constructed so as to produce an approximately-elliptical form of field magnet, are placed between the poles. This construction is also applicable to multipolar machines.
