Abstract

19,882. British Thomson-Houston Co., and Clough, F. H. Sept. 5. Field magnets.-The rotors of high-speed alternators, of the type in which the exciting-winding is carried in slots or tunnels in the core, are formed so that the polar portions project above the interpolar or slotted portions, and allow retaining-rings to be placed on the end windings, the diameters of which rings do not exceed the inside diameters of the stators. The laminae or blocks of which the rotor is built are of the shape shown in Fig. 2, the windings being placed in the tunnels 19 which register with slots 18 in the end plates 15. The spider 9 of magnetic material has an arm 10 opposite each pole, which carries part of the flux and at the same time allows ventilation through the ducts formed by the spacing-blocks between the bundles of laminµ. The retaining-rings 22 may be either fixed to the end plates 15 as shown in Fig. 1, the openings 30 being for ventilation, or may be carried by the non-magnetic brackets 24 shown in Fig. 2. The end windings have plates 27 of some good heat-conducting material inserted between each turn, and are kept in place by the clamping-rings 26 bolted to the retaining-rings 22.
