10,545. Anstey, H. C., and James, C. May 19. Gas and like engines.-Four-stroke-cycle engines with four or more cylinders are started and reversed by using three of them a as compressed-air engines, the remainder b keeping the engine going while the three are adjusted to their normal system of working. The air and fuel admission valves of the cylinders a are worked by cams c<4>, d during normal running, and the compressed-air valves are worked by other cams and the exhaust valves by cams d<3>. In order to start the engine, one of the cylinders a should stop on a dead centre, compressed air is admitted to one of the cylinders b by a valve g lifted by the levers h, k, i, the admission-valve being mounted on an eccentric pivot so that it may be put out of gear by the lever k when the valve g is opened. An indicator, worked from a cam shaft, shows which of the cylinders b is in position to receive a starting-charge. The exhaust cam d<7> of the cylinder b have swells for relieving compression at starting ; the cams d<13> control the fuel and'the cams d<8> the main air-admission valve.
