Filters; adding fibrous material prior to filtering.- A filter for floating- material comprises a compound vessel, the upper part A' of which serves as an inlet vessel, while the lower consists of one or more wire-gauze bodies A'projecting into a lower container or receiving- vessel B. The wiregauze bodies A' may be simple as in Fig. 1 or of concentric cones or cylinders as in Fig. 4. In the latter case, an outlet pipe E is provided for the escape of air. The liquid to be filtered is poured into the vessel A' until the vessel B, which projects some way above the filtering-bodies, is full; some is then drawn off, mixed with asbestos fibre or the like, and returned to the filter ; the liquid is then drawn off by the tap H and the medium settles in the gauze. Two or more perforated distributing-plates V, V<1>, located a considerable distance below the upper edge of the receiving-vessel, are provided to enable even layers of the filtering-material to be obtained and to prevent the layers from being washed off.
