Abstract

6629. Riley, F. G. April 9. Filters; media, compressing in place; cleansing; straining liquids; filtering-media.-Relates more particularly to filters for beer under pressure, wine, and other beverages. The filtering-medium is paper, cotton fibre, or like pulp, and it is compressed, after being poured into the filter, between two plates G, H, having fine circular slots and covered with flannel. The upper plate is forced down by a hand-wheel H<2> and long sleeve H<1>. The liquid enters at the bottom of the filter, by an inlet not shown, and after filtering upwards escapes through a finely-slotted sleeve B<4> surrounding apertures B<3> in the hollow lower part of the central stay B. The liquid then flows to a sight globe C, from which it either discharges into the basin D, or passes to the bottling-machine. On starting, the first cloudy liquid is run into the basin and returned to the supply. The inlet to the filter is fitted with a sight globe similar to C, having a discharge tap, by opening which and closing the supply tap a return flow of filtered liquid is produced, thus cleansing the filter. To cleanse the filter thoroughly, the pulp is broken up, washed, and again compressed. For continuous working, the filter is duplicated, and the filtered liquid from one may be used to cleanse the other. Fig. 5 shows the upper part of a modification suitable for water. A bed of powdered animal charcoal is placed below the pulp P compressed as above. By means of the hollow upper part of the spindle M and valve M<2>, cleansing-liquid may be passed through the charcoal only. K is a sight globe, and K<2> a vent cock. The pipe L is connected through valves, not shown, to either the inlet or the outlet.
