5825. Ellis, C. March 20. Generators or producers.-A gas producer is blown with carbon dioxide, or with waste furnace gases rich in carbon dioxide, instead of with steam so that the producer may be worked at a lower temperature. The waste gases of a metallurgical furnace 4 pass from the regenerators 8, 9 by a pipe 16 to the combustion zone of the producer 1, the outlet pipe 3 of which conveys the gas generated to the combustion chamber 5 of the furnace. An air inlet for the furnace is provided at 14, and a final outlet or stack passage at 15. The return pipe 16 contains a fan blower 18 for forcing in the draught, and an air or oxygen inlet 19 on the suction side of the fan. This inlet, as well as the main pipe, is fitted with a valve or damper 20. The combustion products, when poor in carbon dioxide, are further cooled by means of radiating- fins 22. Waste gases very rich in carbon dioxide, such as those coming from a lime-kiln, may be used without special cooling.
