Abstract

5372. Ranalli, V. March 14. Generators or producers.-An external gas furnace for stationary and marine steam boilers consists of a gas-producer 1 from which the gases pass s through purifiers 12 into one or more combustion chambers 13, where they are mixed with air previously heated by heat from the producer and combustion chambers, and are finally led into the furnace flues 31 of one or more boilers. Gas from the producer passes through a delivery pipe 9, provided with a valve 10, into purifiers 12, where unburnt particles of matter are deposited. These may be afterwards removed through the discharge door 12. Each purifier is provided with a flap valve 14 for regulating the amount of gas which enters into it and also interrupting the direction of the current. Air to effect combustion of the gases within the combustion chamber enters interspaces 8 in the sides and roof of the gas-producer, where it is heated, and flows into an air chamber 22, which is provided with a "trap door 23 for admitting cold air if required. Air from the chamber 22 flows through interspaces surrounding the combustion chambers to enclosed spaces 18 beneath, thence through vertical pipes 17 in the combustion chamber, and vertical channels in the walls of the combustion chambers, to the collecting-chambers 19, which communicate with the combustion chambers by means of passages 25, furnished with regulating- valves operated by handles 26. When the apparatus is first set in operation, much smoke is produced. By removal of the door 5 on the charging-hole, the smoke is conveyed to the chimney 29 by means of flues 27, 28 until production of smoke ceases. The gas-producer is provided with a steam jet beneath the grate 2, the supply being regulated by a valve 35.
