Abstract

5200. Guttmann, O. March 13. Feed-water, heating and purifying. -An annular tank A, in which chemicals are mixed with water and the water is filtered, surrounds a storage tank B for the purified water, which is thus kept at the temperature at which it is treated. The chemical reagent, such as s o d a solution, is supplied from the tank i, passing thence to a tank j through a float valve which maintains a constant liquid level in the tank. From the latter the reagent passes to the mixing-tank through the cock l operated by a float m in the tank B, which also operates the valve o admitting the impure water. The tank A is divided into several compartments by division plates which leave passages at the top and bottom alternately. Mixing takes place in the first two compartments, connexions, sometimes furnished with a thermo-regulator, being provided for the admission of exhaust or live steam to heat and agitate the liquid. The other compartments are packed with iron or wickerwork baskets q containing wood wool or other filtering-medium. The medium is thus easily removed, and as it protrudes through the wide meshes of the baskets a tight joint is made between the baskets and against the sides of the tank. From the top of the last filtering-compartment the liquid enters the tank B, from which it may be drawn off through the outlet g. The compartments and tank communicate with each other on the same level. It is stated that the outer tank A may be coated with material which does not contain heat, and that the softened water may be used for feeding boilers or in laundries. 'The soda solution is made in the tank i to which steam may be admitted through the coil r. Specification No. 11,739, A.D. 1896, [Abridgment Class Filtering &c.], is referred to.
