Abstract

Feed-water, heating and purifying.-Feed is supplied to the heater and purifier through the floatregulated valve T, is heated by exhaust steam as it descends the inclined shelves B, and is mixed with chemicals supplied by the pipe s<4> in the chamber A. Impurities are deposited on angle-irons E in the chamber C, which the water leaves by the pipe J, and also in the chamber H. A pipe L, having a circular shield l<1> at its top, conducts the water to the chamber M whence it passes through a woodwool filter K to a chamber N to which a pump may be connected. The exhaust steam is supplied to the chamber R and heats the water in the chambers A, C, as it passes upwards through pipes P, P<1>, before coming into direct contact with the water on the shelves B. Chemicals are supplied from a tank V by means of the pivoted pipe s<2>, which is connected to a float s<3> in a tank supplied with water from a branch of the main supply pipe. Live steam and air may be passed into the chamber A through the pipe Y. The shelves B, tubes P, P<1>, and chamber R may be omitted and the water heated previously by independent means or by the introduction of live steam.
