Liquids, purifying; filters with horizontal filtering layers; filtering-media, regenerating. - Apparatus for treating water by means of zeolites or other reagent acting on the exchange-of-base principle comprises, in a single unit, a number of pipes or chambers containing the agent and connected at the ends with common inlet and outlet chambers. As shown in Fig. 4, tubes a, in which zeolites are packed between layers of quartz, wood wool, &c, are arranged between tube plates b provided with covers d, f, to form the common inlet and outlet. Fig. 5 shows modified apparatus in which the spaces m between the tubes are also packed with zeolites, and compartments r, t form common inlet and outlet chambers for these spaces. Different kinds of zeolites may be used, two different treatments being carried on simultaneously, or connexions are made so that the spaces m may be used alternatively to the tubes a, regeneration of the media by means of salt solution from the tank h being then possible without discontinuing the water supply.
