1412. Davidson, J. E .Tan.24. Heels; heel protectors; slipping, preventing.-The heel is made in two parts a, b, each of which consists of several layers of wood c cemented and nailed together with the grain running at rightangles in alternate thicknesses. The part a is shaped to fit the boot, and is also provided with a number of holes to receive short dowels d fixed in the part b. Instead of, or in addition to, these dowels, the two parts may be secured together by screws &c. The bottom part b is recessed to receive an india-rubber rim f, which tapers both in thickness and width from the back to the front of the heel. These rims can be interchanged when worn. In military boots, an iron or other metal &c, rim is used.
