UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERI S. MOULTON, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN B. TIERNAN, OF SAME PLACE.
BOOT OR SHOE-HEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,848, dated April 25, 1882.
Application filed August 29, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERI S. MOULTON, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe Heels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This improved heel is made. in two parts, one attached by nailing or otherwise directly to the sole of the boot or shoe at the heel, and the other shaped to fit all sides of the scat-- tached part and to cover the bottom thereof, and adapted for a screw or other suitable fastening device to be passed through its thickness and entered into the heel part attached to the boot or shoe sole all substantially as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying plate of drawings,Figure 1 is a central longitudinal vertical section of a shoe at its heel having a heel of my improved construction applied thereto; Fig. 2, a transverse section.
In the drawings, A represents the heel of a shoe, and B a portion of the sole of the shoe. The heel is made in two parts, 0 D. The part 0 is made of wood, leather, papier-mache', or other suitahlemateriahand its size and dllnlllsions in all directions are less than that which the whole heel, when fin1shed,is to have. This heel part 0 is attached to the sole B by nails or screws or other suitable fastening devices, and it is covered and inclosed on all its surfaces-bottom, front, back, and sides-by the preferably bashed. as shown at F, for the passage of a screw, G, which screw is entered and screwed into the heel part 0, attached directly to the sole of the shoe. This hole E,after the screw is inserted, maybe closed upin anysuitable manneras,for1nstance, with astopper of cork or wood-and the treading-surface of the heel, it'made ofrubber, may have emery orother gritty su bstance incorporated with itto increase its wearing qualities.
A heel made in parts, as described, enables its wearing part to be removed when worn and a new part substituted for it with great readiness and comparatively little expense. Again, as the outer part entirely surrounds the inner part, itis held firmly and securely against turning or moving upon the inner part.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. A boot or shoe heel composed of the inner part, 0, adapted to be permanently secured to the sole, and the outer part, D, recessed to receive the inner part and entirely surround the sides and bottom of the same, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the boot or shoe sole, of the heel composed of the inner part, 0, permanently secured to the sole, the outer part, D formed with a recess which receives the said inner part, the outer part fitting and inclosing the sides and bottom of the inner part and being secured by a screw, G, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, E. S. MOULTON.
