Patented May 21,1872.
AM. PHOTO-UTHOGRAFH/U an. 1v. )1 (assomvs's PROCESS) NITED TATES ISAAC BANISTER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPRCVEMENT IN HEELS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,013, dated May 21, 1872.
- away to 'a greater extent on one side than on the other, and when worn rounding are liable to produce injury to the other parts of the bootor shoe, causing the counter to bend and the shoe to run over to one side or the other. Metallic heels have been employed that could be revolved, and rubber heels also have been used.
My invention is made for securing a rubber heel to the boot or shoe in such a manner that the same can be taken off with facility for changing the heels from one boot or shoe to the other, and for replacing a worn heel by a new one. At the same time the ordinary form of heel is preserved, and there is an elasticity that is advantageous as preventing concussion either upon the boot itself or the person walking with the same.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a section of the elastic tap or heel. Fig. 2 is a view of the upper side of the same, and Fig. 3 is a section of a boot-heel and the said elastic tap attached thereto.
I make the elastic tap a of India rubber of the desired thickness, having a surrounding flange, b, that is thickest at its edges, so that the space inclosed by the said flange is larger jured. leather of the upper part of the heel to conat the inner surface of the tap a than it is at the top edge of such flange b. Upon the boot or shoe I secure, at the heel, a metallic shell, 0, with a dovetail rim or flange, d. This shell may be attached in place by nails or screws, and its concave side filled in with paper, wood, leather, or other material at 0, so as to belevel with the edges of the flange d,- and the size of this shell and dovetail rim is to be such that the elastic heel-tap a b can be stretched over the same, and the flange b, contracting around the overhanging or dovetail edges or rim cl, will secure said elastic tap firmly in place, but allow of its removal and change from one heel to another, or the substitution of a new elastic heel for one worn out or in- The bootmaker can dress off the form to the exterior of the elastic tap; thereby the heel will appear as if made in the ordinary manner, but will possess the advantageous features aforesaid.
The elastic heel or tap may be made of rub.- ber or other similar material of sufficient elasticity to allow of being applied as described.
I claim as my invention- The elastic heel-tap made with flanges in the manner specified, in combination with the metallic shell having dovetailed flanged edges, as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 1st day of April, 1872.
I. BANISTER.
