202. Sturtevant, T. L., and Sturtevant, T. J. Jan. 4. Gas or explosive-vapour engines, carburetting in. Fig. 1 shows a carburettor of inverted U-section, in which hydrocarbons are admitted to the limb 5, through the conical valve 6 from the float chamber 2. The position of the valve 6 is adjusted by means of the screwed head 8, which is sufficiently large to enable the valve to be withdrawn from the carburettor. The air supply through the inlet 9 is controlled by the suction-operated valve 10, the spindle 11 of which carries an arm having a roller 13, Fig. 3, which bears against a spring- controlled lever 12. A spring 16 keeps the roller in contact with the lever 12, the resistance of the lever to the opening of the valve decreasing as the valve opens and increases, the distance between the point of contact of the roller and the pivot of the lever at the same time increasing. The cone of gauze wire in the limb 21 completely atomizes the mixture and prevents explosions from taking place in the carburettor. A throttle valve 18 and a by-pass 19 are provided in the chamber 17 as shown in Fig. 1.
