Engines actuated by mixed steam and air.-A motor is actuated by a mixture of steam and air, which is obtained by heating moist cold air. The moist air is obtained by bubbling air through cold water, or through hot water and subsequently cooling the air, or the air is moistened with steam, and afterwards cooled. In the arrangement shown in the Figure, air is drawn through a check valve i, bubbles up through water in the chamber b, and is drawn by a double-acting bellows pump l into a chamber 5. The pump consists of a bellows body, in the middle of which a diaphragm is secured. The diaphragm is operated by a rod, so that air is drawn in through valves 6, 7 and discharged through valves 8,10. The air passes from a chamber 9 to a chamber d in which are sliding plates m, n acted on by compressed air admitted through a pipe v. The air passes through a cock p into a chamber e, which is enclosed in an outer casing s, and is heated by a lamp a having a central air passage r. The products of combustion escape by a pipe k, and the steam and air by a pipe z.
